Celebrate Thanksgiving while building useful English speaking skills with this fun, colorful, and highly interactive ESL PowerPoint lesson! Students learn about Thanksgiving while practicing vocabulary related to gratitude, family, and traditional Thanksgiving foods through speaking activities, games, dialogues, and a creative final activity.
This lesson is designed primarily for Grades 2–3 ESL learners, but it can also work well with other beginner-level young learners.
The PowerPoint includes English and Chinese support for Chinese ESL classrooms. After purchasing and downloading the lesson, the PowerPoint is fully editable, so the Chinese can be removed or replaced with another language.
Target Vocabulary
Students learn people and things they can be thankful for:
• teachers
• family
• friends
• country
• home
Students also learn four common Thanksgiving foods:
• turkey
• vegetables
• mashed potatoes
• pumpkin pie
Target Language
Students learn to talk about what they are thankful for:
“What are you thankful for?”
→ “I’m thankful for my ___.”
Examples:
“I’m thankful for my family.”
“I’m thankful for my friends.”
“I’m thankful for my home.”
Students also practice politely asking for Thanksgiving foods:
“May I have some ___, please?”
→ “Here you are.”
→ “Thank you!”
