Take your students on a trip around the world with Part 1 of this colorful and interactive Food Around the World ESL lesson series! Designed for Grade 4–5 learners, this lesson introduces students to 10 countries from around the world and gives them plenty of opportunities to recognize, say, locate, and talk about each country before learning about their famous foods in Part 2.

Students get lots of repetition without doing the same activity over and over:
✅ Country Guessing Game – Pictures are gradually revealed while students try to identify the country
✅ What’s Missing? – Students study the countries and identify which one has disappeared
✅ World Map Team Game – Teams compete to correctly identify and label the 10 countries on a world map
✅ Answer Reveal – Review the correct locations together after the team challenge
✅ Pair Share – Students ask a partner which country they would like to visit and then switch roles
✅ Writing Activity – Students choose a country and write several sentences about where they would like to go, who they would go with, what they would like to do, and what they think about the country
💬 Speaking Practice
After students are comfortable with the country vocabulary, the lesson moves into personal speaking practice with the question:
“Which country would you like to visit?”
Students answer:
“I would like to visit ______.”
This gives students a chance to use the new country vocabulary to talk about their own interests and travel preferences, rather than simply repeating words from the screen.
✏️ Final Writing Activity
Students finish the lesson by choosing one of the countries and writing 3–4 sentences about it using guided prompts and a helpful word bank.

Where they would like to visit
Who they would like to go with
What they would like to do there
What they think about the country
This provides a natural progression from vocabulary → recognition → games → speaking → partner practice → independent writing.

This lesson is Part 1: Countries of the Food Around the World lesson series. Students first learn the 10 countries in this lesson, preparing them for Part 2: Food, where they will learn foods from these countries and connect each food with its country of origin.
