Continue your trip around the world with Part 2 of the Food Around the World ESL lesson series! Designed for Grade 4–5 learners, this colorful and interactive PowerPoint lesson introduces students to 10 popular foods from 10 different countries and teaches them how to talk about where those foods are popular.
Part 2 builds directly on the countries introduced in Part 1: Countries. Students first learn the food vocabulary, then connect each food with its country through interactive games, memory challenges, speaking activities, pair work, and differentiated writing tasks.

💬 Target Language
After learning the food vocabulary, students connect the foods with the countries from Part 1 using the target question:
“What food is popular in this country?”
Students practice complete sentences such as:
“Pizza is popular in Italy.”
“Dumplings are popular in China.”
“Tacos are popular in Mexico.”
“Pad thai is popular in Thailand.”
Students also practice choosing between “is popular in…” and “are popular in…” when building complete sentences.

The lesson includes a variety of activities designed to give students lots of repetition while keeping them actively involved:
✅ Slow Reveal Game – Students guess the food as the picture is gradually revealed
✅ What’s Missing? – Students study the foods and identify which one has disappeared
✅ Country + Food Matching Game – Students look at a country and choose the correct popular food
✅ Memory Challenge – Students use flags and country knowledge to remember the correct food without food pictures to help them
✅ Sentence Building Game – Students create complete sentences using “_____ is/are popular in _____.”
✅ Pair Work – Students take turns asking and answering questions about foods and countries
✅ Writing Activities – Students combine the country and food vocabulary in a guided final writing task
🌎 Connecting Food & Countries
A major focus of Part 2 is helping students connect the vocabulary from both lessons.
Students progress from simply recognizing the foods to answering questions such as:

➡️ What food is popular in China?
➡️ Dumplings are popular in China.
➡️ What food is popular in the United Kingdom?
➡️ Fish and chips are popular in the United Kingdom.
This gives students meaningful practice with food vocabulary, country names, speaking, memory, and complete sentence production.
🗣️ Pair Speaking Practice
Students work with a partner to practice the target language using the countries and foods from the lesson.
Students take turns asking:
“What food is popular in ______?”
and answering:
“______ is/are popular in ______.”
They then switch roles and continue with different countries, giving every student an opportunity to speak and participate.
✏️ Vocabulary Extension & Final Writing Activity
Before the final writing activity, students learn the useful verb:
try = eat something to see if you like it
Students see simple examples such as:
“I would like to try pizza.”
“I would like to try dumplings.”
This short vocabulary extension prepares students to use “I would like to try…” in their writing without adding another major speaking structure to the lesson.
The lesson then provides two writing activity options, allowing teachers to choose the version that best matches their class.
Students choose a country and can write about:
“I would like to visit ______.”
“______ is/are popular in ______.”
“I would like to try this food because ______.”
“I think this country looks ______.”
The writing activity also includes three difficulty levels, allowing teachers to provide extra support or a greater challenge depending on their students’ English ability.

🌎 Part 2 of the Food Around the World Series
This lesson is Part 2: Food of the Food Around the World lesson series.
Part 1: Countries introduces the 10 countries, their names, maps, flags, and locations while students practice talking about countries they would like to visit.
Part 2: Food builds on that knowledge by introducing a popular food connected with each country and giving students opportunities to combine the vocabulary from both lessons.
For the best learning progression, Part 1 and Part 2 are designed to be taught together, but Part 2 can also be adapted as a standalone food lesson if students already know the country vocabulary.

This lesson was originally designed for Chinese ESL learners, so Chinese translations are included with the new food vocabulary to support comprehension. The PowerPoint is fully editable, and the lesson is designed so teachers can easily remove the Chinese or replace it with another language to match their students’ L1.
